The UK Open Web Archive provided by the British Library
Redeveloping the UK Web Archive
There are millions of UK websites. They are constantly changing and even disappearing.
The British Library awarded a contract for the provision of website development to Mars Spiders.
The work is focused on the re-development of the Open UK Web Archive.
The final deliverable of the contract is a new web-based end-user application that provides an interface to the Library’s several web archives. This helps the user to search and browse these rich collections, which are now significantly larger than the selective archive and contain billions of URLs with different access rights.
The new interface also presents the web archives innovatively in a usable and intuitive way that is visually compelling. It meets the requirements of research users as well as general usage.
We take an iterative approach, releasing multiple versions for testing and obtaining user feedback during the development process.
We are also creating strong identity/brand for UK Web Archive. We are building a worldclass research service for archived web content, and will endeavour to provide a research platform that integrates us and our users with the wider world. Wherever possible, we will reuse concepts and patterns that are familiar to our user base. Where we are forced to introduce unfamiliar concepts, we will take care to bridge that gap, as part of the UX design process.
